Hearing Evaluations: What to Expect

When you schedule an appointment for a hearing evaluation at North Houston Hearing Solutions, located in Spring, Texas in north Houston, you can expect comprehensive hearing evaluations and personalized solutions in a warm, caring environment.

Our audiologists will begin your hearing evaluation with a discussion of your hearing health history. Some of the questions may include:

•    Why did you schedule your appointment? What symptoms are you experiencing? What are your concerns?
•    Do you having ringing, humming or buzzing in your ears? The condition is called tinnitus and it often accompanies hearing loss. We offer tinnitus management.
•    Which situations or environments cause you the most difficulty hearing?
•    Do you have a family history of hearing loss?
•    Are you taking any over-the-counter or prescription medications?
•    Do you have a history of exposure to loud noise?
•    What are your expectations of treatment?

Then we will conduct an Otoscopy, a visual examination of your ears and your ear canals, looking for wax buildup, debris, inflammation and infection- which can affect your hearing.

Next, we’ll begin the testing portion of your hearing evaluation by performing some or all of the following:

•    Tympanometry- used to test the condition of the middle ear, the mobility of the eardrum (tympanic membrane), and the conduction bones by creating variations of air pressure in the ear canal.
•    Acoustic reflex testing - helps to determine if the muscles within the ear are functioning properly.
•    Speech reception threshold - determines the lowest level at which you can understand speech. Word recognition shows us how well you can understand speech at your most comfortable listening level.
•    Otoacoustic emissions (OAE) --is an objective evaluation of cochlear function, useful in hearing assessments for infants and newborns who cannot provide behavioral feedback.

We use the results of the hearing evaluation, as well as the information you’ve provided, to determine the existence, type and severity of your hearing loss. Then we establish a personalized treatment plan, based on your unique needs.
If we conclude that hearing aids will be beneficial with you, we’ll assist you in choosing devices that best suit your individual needs, as well as your lifestyle, budget and any cosmetic concerns you may have.
