When you invest in hearing aids, you’re investing in your good health and quality of life.

If challenges with the hearing aid of you or a loved one have become frustrated, you may need to weigh the cost of repairing your hearing aid versus replacement.

Hearing aids should last up to five years, or even longer with good maintenance and cleaning.

The effect of poor hearing aid maintenance

Hopefully, you have not neglected regular maintenance and cleaning of your hearing aids. Old batteries should be exchanged for fresh ones depending upon how often the hearing aids are used.

Replace hearing aid batteries every 2 weeks or every month for the best sound quality.

Some issues with hearing aids occur simply because of wax or debris build-up that will muffle sound or cause feedback (whistling noise).

Many people will experience an increase in earwax production while wearing hearing aids.  It is recommended to clean hearing aids every night at bedtime using the proper tools.

It is also possible that the hearing aid is not defective, but the wearer’s hearing capacity may have changed. As we get older, our hearing will continue to decline naturally.

If you believe your hearing aid is not picking up on voices on other sounds, you may want to schedule a professional hearing exam so that an adjustment can be made.

Hearing aid repair costs

There are times when you will need a hearing aid professional to clean, repair, or replace broken hearing aids. The cost of this service will depend on the type of hearing aids and the services that are needed.

Since each professional service and different geographical areas will have varied costs for hearing aid repair and/or servicing, the costs will depend on the following factors:

  • Age and condition of the hearing aids
  • Low-quality or budget-priced hearing aids
  • Extensive visible damage (smashed or stepped on)
  • A history of hearing aid repairs

Hearing aid repairs can be costly, so consider whether it is more beneficial to replace old hearing aids with a better quality product that features new technology such as those hearing aids offered by ReSound, Phonak, Oticon, Starkey, and Widex.

The most expensive repairs are cosmetic repairs to hearing aids such as a smashed casing. Re-casing the electronic device can cost up to $600.  If the problem is with the hearing aid electronics, it may cost up to $400 to replace the electronic component.

Before you have your hearing aids repaired or replaced, schedule a hearing test with North Houston Hearing Solutions.

Also, discuss the age, quality, and condition of the hearing aids. It may be better to replace and not repair your hearing aids.

If you’ve taken good care of your hearing aids, you may want to check for any warranties or insurance policies that came with the product.
